Memorable and versatile pewter products

Ever thought of something tangible, craft orientated but practical for use that can also be kept as a treasure? Or maybe an item that is more meaningful than it appears? Consider objects made from pewter.

Some items create more lasting memories than others, not because they are pricey but because they are timeless and traditional, with a high perceived value.  Pewter is inexpensive compared to its silver counterpart, so it is affordable to many.

Manufacture and history

You might wonder what form of material or metals pewter is fabricated from. Well, it’s a malleable alloy composed of mostly tin with copper and antimony with minute quantities of bismuth. Modern pewter is usually lead free allowing for safe use.

Pewter has a history that serves as a guide for where we came from and where we are headed. This versatile product has been used in the making of housewares since time immemorial. The first piece was found in an Egyptian tomb as far back as the 1450 B.C.  Pewter products were used in the ancient world by Egyptians and later the Romans. In Europe, items made from pewter were ostentatious that only the affluent could afford.  However, its popularity in the household and tavern dwindled for two main reasons. It contained lead and porcelain replaced it as a non-toxic material for houseware. In modern times the lead constituent of pewter has been removed as only the purest of tin ore is now used to produce pewter, with the minute quantities of lead removed in the refinement process.

Pewter products have many benefits which include:

They are less expensive when compared to silverware.

They are quite difficult to break due to the copper and antimony constituents.

Effortlessly formed into special designs, there are few products that are so malleable with such a low melting point.

The present-day pewter contains no lead and as such doesn’t have the dark appearance of antique products. It can also be burnished to enhance its attraction.

It bears a warm, handcrafted appearance.

Creative art that is practical and unique

Today, Pewter product designs have made a comeback and are much better.  Pewter World (www.pewterworld.co.uk) takes us back in time, helping us relive the past and keeping us in touch with tradition. We are able to appreciate the creative work of art with the advanced quality of pewter containing no lead.

Portable Hip flasks have become increasingly popular during the coronavirus lockdown. They make ideal gifts that can be engraved with touch marks. Unique Goblets stand out at dinners and social gatherings even from a ‘social distance’.  And unusual gifts for all ages in the form of craft jewellery from Scotland and Cornwall are all available.

Antique but not obsolete
